Iām Preparing for My First Competition

Preparing for your first bodybuilding competition can feel complicated because there are a lot of decisions to make before you ever step onstage. You need to choose a federation, show and division, give yourself enough time to prepare, and understand what judges will actually be looking for.
Then there is the practical side: training, nutrition, posing, tanning, hair and makeup if your division requires it, and everything that needs to happen during peak week and on competition day.
You don't need to figure it all out at once.
Start with the big decisions
Before choosing a show, make sure you understand the different bodybuilding divisions and where your physique may fit. Requirements and judging criteria vary between divisions and federations, so don't assume that Bikini, Figure, Wellness, Classic Physique or Men's Physique are simply different versions of the same competition.

Decide whether you need a coach
You can prepare for a competition without hiring a coach, but contest prep involves much more than losing body fat. A good Contest Prep Coach can help you establish a realistic timeline, manage training and nutrition, assess your physique as prep progresses and guide you through peak week.
If you're considering coaching, How Much Do Bodybuilding Prep Coaches Cost? explains what you may be paying for and what to compare before choosing someone.
Don't leave posing until the end
Your physique is judged by how you present it. Learning your mandatory poses, transitions and stage presentation early gives you time to practice until they become natural.
Browse Posing Coaches if you need individual help, and read How Much Does Bodybuilding Posing Coaching Cost? if you're deciding whether professional posing instruction is worth adding to your prep.
As your show gets closer, you'll also need to arrange Competition Tanning, Competition Hair & Makeup, Competition Photography and any Backstage & Show-Day Support you want.
The goal isn't to make your first competition perfect. It's to arrive knowing what to expect, with the important decisions already made and a team around you where you need one.
